Dusky wireworm is the soil-dwelling larva of the click beetle Agriotes obscurus. It feeds on seeds, roots, crowns, stems and tubers, with grasses and other Poaceae considered its principal host group. Damage is most likely in fields or gardens recently converted from lawn, pasture or weedy grassland. Because larvae resemble other wireworms, species-level identification often requires specialist examination.

Agriotes obscurus is commonly called the dusky wireworm or dark click beetle. The damaging stage is the slender, cylindrical larva, usually yellow to brown with a darker head and a firm, segmented body. Adults are elongated click beetles and generally cause little direct crop injury.
The species is native to Europe and has been introduced into parts of western North America, including British Columbia and Washington State. In the United States, many wireworm problems are instead caused by native genera such as Limonius, Melanotus, Conoderus and Selatosomus. A confirmed species identification is therefore important before making a site-specific management decision.
Symptoms and identification
- Missing, weak or uneven stands caused by feeding on planted seed or young roots.
- Stunting, wilting or death of seedlings after larvae injure roots, crowns or underground stems.
- Small round to irregular holes and tunnels in potato tubers and other fleshy underground organs.
- Reduced root systems, hollowed seed pieces and secondary rots entering through feeding wounds.
- Patchy injury, often concentrated where former pasture, lawn, sod or weedy grassland was recently cultivated.
Aboveground symptoms are nonspecific. Finding a wireworm in the damaged root zone supports the diagnosis, but does not by itself prove that it is A. obscurus.
Causes and spread
Larvae are favored by fields with a history of grass, pasture, hay, sod or dense weeds. They are attracted to carbon dioxide and other compounds released by germinating seeds and roots. Damage is commonly associated with potatoes, cereals and other crops planted into previously grassy ground.
Spread occurs locally as adults lay eggs in suitable grassy soil and as larvae move through infested fields. Long-distance movement can occur with infested soil, roots, tubers, nursery material or contaminated farm equipment. Larval wireworms are difficult to distinguish among species, and mixed populations are common.
Life cycle and persistence
The life cycle generally takes about 2–5 years, depending on temperature, moisture, food supply and location. Eggs are laid in soil in spring and hatch after several weeks. Larvae pass through multiple instars while feeding underground, often moving vertically in response to soil moisture and temperature.
Pupation usually occurs in late summer or autumn. Adults develop in the soil and may remain there until the following spring, when they emerge, mate and lay eggs. Larvae are often most damaging near germinating seed and young roots, although they can also tunnel into developing tubers.
Treatment and control
There is no reliable rescue treatment for larvae already tunneling inside tubers or established below the root zone. In small gardens, dig affected plants, remove badly damaged tubers and roots, and dispose of infested crop residues rather than composting heavily infested material.
For field crops, base decisions on preplant sampling and crop value. In severe seedling injury, replanting may help only when done early enough for the replacement crop to establish. Shallow or well-timed cultivation can expose larvae to predators, but excessive tillage can harm soil structure and beneficial organisms. Management should be planned before planting because postemergence control is often inconsistent.
Low-impact and biological control
- Use cereal-seed, corn-seed or carrot bait stations to locate hot spots and guide planting or avoidance decisions; replace baits regularly and identify captured larvae when species confirmation matters.
- Maintain weed control and use rotations that reduce continuous grass or cereal host availability.
- Use cultivation and fallow periods strategically where appropriate for the soil and cropping system, balancing wireworm suppression against erosion and organic-matter losses.
- Encourage insectivorous birds and other soil-surface predators after cultivation.
- Commercial biological products based on entomopathogenic fungi or nematodes may have potential, but performance depends strongly on formulation, soil moisture, temperature, application method and the target wireworm species. Use only products registered or otherwise legally permitted for the intended crop and site.
- Some research indicates that buckwheat and other cover-crop strategies can reduce feeding or larval development under particular conditions, but results are not universal and should not replace local trials or monitoring.
Prevention
- Inspect soil before planting susceptible crops, especially after grass sod, pasture, hay or weedy fallow. Use bait stations with untreated wheat, corn or other suitable seed to estimate wireworm activity, recognizing that baits attract several species.
- Allow adequate time between breaking sod and planting high-value susceptible crops when practical. Repeated cultivation or a managed fallow period can reduce food resources and expose larvae, although it will not eliminate established populations.
- Remove volunteer grasses and control weeds before planting, while avoiding practices that leave dense grassy refuges immediately adjacent to susceptible crops.
- Rotate away from cereals, corn and other susceptible hosts where local experience indicates risk. Choose vigorous, well-adapted planting material and maintain consistent moisture and fertility for rapid establishment.
- Use clean seed potatoes and clean equipment; avoid moving soil from infested areas.
