Potato wart is a serious, soilborne quarantine disease caused by the obligate chytrid fungus Synchytrium endobioticum. It produces rough, cauliflower-like galls on potato tubers, stolons, eyes, sprouts, and sometimes stem bases. The pathogen can persist in infested soil for decades, spread in infected tubers and attached soil, and requires immediate reporting and regulatory action in the United States.

Overview
Potato wart, also called wart disease or black wart of potato, primarily affects cultivated potato (Solanum tuberosum). The pathogen infects actively growing meristematic tissues, especially tuber eyes, tuber initials, stolons, sprouts, and occasionally stem bases or other shoots. Roots are generally not infected.
Galls may begin as pale, greenish, or whitish soft growths and later become brown or black as tissue ages and decays. Symptoms can be confused with other potato diseases, physiological growths, or soil contamination, so suspected cases require official diagnostic confirmation.
In the United States, suspected potato wart must be reported promptly to the appropriate state plant regulatory official or USDA APHIS. Do not move, plant, sell, compost, or discard suspect tubers or associated soil before receiving instructions.
Symptoms and identification
The characteristic symptom is a cauliflower-like, irregular wart or gall on the potato tuber. Galls range from pinhead-sized growths to large masses that can cover much of the tuber surface. They are often white, cream, or greenish when young, then turn brown and finally black as they break down.

Roots are typically unaffected. Confirmation should distinguish potato wart from powdery scab, black scurf, common scab, smut, and noninfectious “pseudo-wart” growth.
Causes and spread
Synchytrium endobioticum is an obligate parasite: it requires living host tissue to reproduce and does not grow on ordinary artificial culture media. Disease development is favored by cool, wet soil and prolonged moisture around developing potato tubers.
Long-lived resting sporangia accumulate in infested soil when infected warts decay. Spread occurs mainly through infected or contaminated seed potatoes, infested soil attached to tubers, farm equipment, tools, vehicles, footwear, water movement, discarded potatoes, and manure from animals that consumed infected tubers. Human-assisted movement is the principal pathway for introducing the pathogen to new fields.
Life cycle and persistence
Thick-walled resting sporangia survive in soil and in decaying wart tissue. When soil is sufficiently moist and temperatures are suitable, they germinate and release motile zoospores. Zoospores swim through water films in soil, encyst on susceptible potato tissues, and penetrate living cells.
The pathogen develops inside host cells and induces abnormal host-cell enlargement and division, forming a gall. Short-cycle sporangia produce additional zoospores during the growing season. Sexual processes can produce new thick-walled resting sporangia, which are released as wart tissue decomposes and may remain viable for approximately 30–50 years under favorable preservation conditions.
Pathotypes differ in their ability to infect potato cultivars, so resistance to one pathotype does not necessarily provide complete protection against another.
Treatment and control
There is no practical home-garden treatment that eradicates Synchytrium endobioticum from infested soil. In the United States, a confirmed detection triggers official quarantine and regulatory measures. These may include restricting movement of potatoes, plants, soil, equipment, and other regulated materials; destroying host crops; managing infected plant debris by an approved method; and placing the field under long-term monitoring or land-use restrictions.
Do not attempt to dig out individual warts and replant the remaining tubers. Do not compost suspect material or wash soil into drains, streams, or other garden beds. Resistant varieties may help reduce disease development, but resistance must be matched to the confirmed pathotype and does not replace regulatory control.
Low-impact and biological control
No reliable organic, biological, or nonchemical curative treatment is available for eliminating potato wart from infested soil. The most effective low-input measures are exclusion, sanitation, certified seed, prevention of soil movement, destruction or approved handling of suspect host material, and use of appropriately resistant potato cultivars under official guidance.
Do not rely on compost teas, microbial products, household disinfectants applied to soil, crop rotation alone, or informal soil treatments as eradication methods. Because the pathogen can persist for decades, sanitation and regulatory containment are more important than short-term suppression.
Prevention
- Plant only officially certified, disease-free seed potatoes from reputable sources.
- Never bring uncertified potatoes, soil, compost, or manure from areas with an unknown plant-health history into a potato plot.
- Clean soil from tools, footwear, vehicles, planters, and harvesting equipment before moving between fields or gardens.
- Prevent movement of water, soil, and cull potatoes from suspect areas.
- Remove volunteer potatoes and avoid planting potatoes in soil of unknown origin.
- Use potato cultivars with documented resistance to the relevant pathotype where such information is available.
- Maintain records of seed sources and field locations.
- If symptoms are found, stop movement of potatoes and soil and contact the state plant regulatory official or USDA APHIS for instructions.
