Oak anthracnose is a cool, wet-weather fungal disease associated with Apiognomonia errabunda, especially on oak leaves, shoots, and twigs. Early infections may produce vein-associated brown blotches, distorted foliage, shoot blight, and occasional twig dieback. In established landscape trees it is usually cosmetic or temporary, but repeated severe infection can reduce vigor, particularly in young trees and nursery stock.

Oak anthracnose caused by Apiognomonia errabunda is a foliar and shoot disease of temperate broadleaf trees. In the United States, it is most frequently discussed in connection with Quercus species, although the fungus has also been reported on beech and basswood or linden.
Most established landscape oaks tolerate the disease and produce replacement foliage as conditions become warmer and drier. Damage can be more consequential in seedlings, nursery trees, repeatedly defoliated trees, or trees already stressed by drought, root injury, construction, or other diseases.
Symptoms resembling oak anthracnose may also be caused by other fungi, frost injury, bacterial leaf scorch, insect damage, or environmental stress. Laboratory diagnosis is advisable when symptoms are severe, unusual, or associated with progressive branch dieback.
Symptoms and identification
- Young leaves may develop water-soaked areas that enlarge into irregular tan, reddish-brown, or dark-brown dead blotches.
- Necrotic tissue commonly follows leaf veins and may leave distorted, shriveled, or partially blighted leaves.
- Severe early-season infections can kill expanding shoots, terminal buds, and small twigs.
- Small oval cankers or dead areas may occur on young twigs and petioles.

Causes and spread
The disease develops when susceptible young tissues remain wet during cool spring or early-summer weather. Spores produced on infected leaves, petioles, and overwintered twigs are spread mainly by rain splash and wind-driven rain. Dense canopies, prolonged rainfall, poor air movement, and repeated wetting of new foliage increase infection risk.
Infected fallen leaves and dead twigs can serve as sources of spores for the following season. Long-distance movement from nearby forest trees and landscape plantings is possible, so complete exclusion is not realistic.
Life cycle and persistence
Apiognomonia errabunda survives the dormant season in infected twigs, leaf petioles, and other diseased plant debris. During wet periods in spring, it produces sexual or asexual spores that infect emerging leaves and shoots.
Fresh infections can produce additional spores during continued wet weather, allowing repeated cycles on expanding foliage. Disease activity generally declines as leaves mature and weather becomes warmer and drier. The fungus may persist in asymptomatic or lightly affected tissues, making visible symptoms an imperfect measure of its presence.
Treatment and control
For most mature landscape oaks, treatment is unnecessary because the disease is primarily cosmetic and trees commonly refoliate. First confirm that symptoms are consistent with anthracnose rather than bacterial leaf scorch, frost injury, Tubakia leaf spot, or another cause.
Improve tree vigor, reduce drought stress, and prune dead twigs during the dormant season. For highly valued young trees, nursery stock, or trees with a history of severe annual damage, a certified arborist or plant diagnostic laboratory can help determine whether preventive fungicide protection is justified.
Protective treatments, when appropriate, must be timed before or at bud break and repeated according to the product label because fungicides do not restore already necrotic tissue. Spraying large mature trees is often impractical, costly, and potentially hazardous.
Low-impact and biological control
- Remove and dispose of fallen leaves and pruned diseased twigs; do not leave infected debris beneath susceptible trees.
- Improve air circulation through proper tree spacing and corrective pruning, but avoid excessive crown thinning.
- Water deeply during drought and maintain mulch to moderate soil temperature and conserve moisture.
- Favor locally adapted, less susceptible oak species or cultivars when replacing severely affected nursery trees.
- Use an integrated approach rather than relying on unverified home remedies or foliar sprays.

- Plant oak species and provenances suited to the site, with adequate spacing for mature crown development.
- Maintain consistent irrigation during drought, applying water to the root zone rather than wetting foliage.
- Use a 2- to 4-inch layer of organic mulch, keeping mulch several inches away from the trunk.
- Prune dead or severely blighted twigs during dormancy when practical, disinfecting tools between visibly diseased trees.
- Rake and remove fallen oak leaves where practical, especially around young trees, nurseries, and repeatedly affected plantings.
- Avoid unnecessary nitrogen fertilization, root disturbance, trunk injury, and compacted-soil conditions.
