Walnut husk fly, Rhagoletis completa, is a tephritid fruit-fly pest of walnuts in many parts of the United States, especially the West. Its larvae feed inside the green husk, producing soft blackened patches, staining the shell and making hulling difficult. Kernel damage is often limited in backyard trees, but early infestations can cause shriveled or moldy nuts. Sanitation, monitoring and well-timed bait-based IPM are the main management tools.

Overview

Rhagoletis completa is commonly called walnut husk fly or walnut husk maggot. It occurs in several regions of the United States and is particularly important in California and other western walnut-growing areas. Adults are about housefly-sized, with iridescent greenish eyes, a yellow shoulder-area spot and conspicuously banded wings.

Females deposit eggs beneath the skin of developing walnut husks. The larvae feed within the fleshy husk, causing soft black decay that can stain the shell and make hulling difficult. Backyard growers may tolerate the pest when kernels remain sound, whereas commercial in-shell production is more sensitive to staining and cleanup problems.

Symptoms and identification

  • Soft, smooth, dark brown to black blotches develop on maturing green walnut husks, often near the stem end or on shaded portions.
  • Removing the husk may reveal cream-to-yellow, legless maggots with black mouth hooks feeding in groups.
  • The husk flesh decays and may remain stuck to the shell, producing dark shell staining and difficult hulling.
  • Heavy or early infestations can contribute to shriveled, moldy or poor-quality kernels, although many backyard infestations primarily affect the husk.
  • Hard, dry black lesions are more suggestive of walnut blight than husk-fly feeding and should not be confused with this pest.

Causes and spread

Adults emerge from soil beneath or near infested walnut trees and generally remain close to a suitable walnut canopy while nuts are available. Females puncture the green husk and lay eggs in small groups. Larvae develop inside the husk, then leave mature nuts or fallen nuts and enter the soil to pupate. Dropped infested walnuts are therefore an important source of local carryover.

Late-maturing, thick-husked walnut varieties are often more vulnerable because suitable husk tissue remains available during the adult flight period. Local timing and severity vary with climate, cultivar, tree location and prior infestation.

Life cycle and persistence

Walnut husk fly normally has one generation per year. It overwinters as a puparium in the soil. Adult emergence may begin in late spring in some areas, but is commonly concentrated from July through August; regional flights can continue into early fall.

Adults typically mate and begin oviposition about 10 days to 4 weeks after emergence. Eggs generally hatch in about 5–7 days. Larvae pass through three stages and feed in the husk for roughly 3–5 weeks, depending on temperature. Mature larvae leave the husk, drop to the ground and pupate. Most emerge the following season, but some pupae can remain dormant for two or more years.

Treatment and control

Begin with monitoring rather than calendar spraying. Inspect traps and nuts for the first sustained adult activity, then combine sanitation with measures directed at adult flies before egg laying. In a backyard tree, treatment may not be worthwhile if kernels remain sound and the main concern is cosmetic shell staining.

  • Remove infested and fallen nuts promptly throughout the season.
  • Use yellow sticky traps as monitoring tools, not as a substitute for sanitation in a large tree.
  • Where treatment is justified, bait-based applications can target adult flies while reducing the need for complete canopy coverage; timing and reapplication must follow the product label and local extension guidance.
  • Do not rely on soil insecticide treatments to eliminate the pest; the protected pupal stage and uneven emergence make this approach unreliable and potentially harmful to soil organisms.

Low-impact and biological control

Sanitation is the most broadly useful nonchemical tactic: collect fallen walnuts at least weekly during the susceptible period, remove blackened husks and prevent larvae from reaching the soil. In heavily infested trees, repeated cleanup over more than one season may be needed because some pupae can persist in diapause.

Yellow sticky traps with an appropriate food lure can help identify adult activity and guide decisions. Some bait formulations based on spinosad are marketed for fruit-fly management, but organic status, crop registration, state availability and permitted uses vary. Use only a product whose current U.S. label specifically allows the intended crop and site, and verify organic certification requirements if that status matters.

Prevention

  • Inspect walnuts regularly from early summer through harvest, especially when monitoring indicates adult flight.
  • Hang yellow sticky traps in the walnut canopy to detect adults; ammonium-carbonate lures can improve detection where locally recommended.
  • Rake and remove fallen walnuts frequently, before mature larvae leave the husk and enter the soil.
  • Destroy or tightly seal infested husks and nuts; do not leave them beneath the tree or place them in an inadequately managed compost pile.
  • Harvest promptly when nuts are mature and continue collecting dropped nuts throughout the season.
